School system names Employees of the Year
Each spring, employees from across the county are nominated by co-workers for recognition in five
categories: Principal of the Year, Assistant Principal of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Certified
Employee of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year. These nominees are interviewed and the five
selected overall employees of the year are announced. Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative partners
with the school system to sponsor the Employee of the Year program. The 2008-2009 Principal of the Year
is Sue Kreuser of Morehead City Middle School. The Assistant Principal of the Year is Catherine Warren
of Beaufort Elementary School. The Teacher of the Year is Todd Williamson, a seventh grade science teacher
at Broad Creek Middle School. The Certified Employee of the Year is Janet McLendon, the technology facilitator
at Beaufort Middle School. The Classified Employee of the Year is Patsy Hill, a teacher assistant at Morehead
City Primary School.
Tar Heel Junior Historians received state award
What does an elementary school student know about U-boats, victory gardens or blackouts? Plenty if that student
is a member of the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association at Morehead City Elementary School. The club formed in
September and its 25 members have been so active they earned the North Carolina Museum of History's Rookie of
the Year Junior Historian Association Club Award. The History Place in Morehead City is the club's partner.
According to the Morehead City Elementary School's Club Volunteer Advisor Carol Smith, The History Place received
a Save Our History Grant from the History Channel that required a partnership with a school. A former teacher and
museum educator, Ms. Smith volunteers to work with the club members each week. Morehead City Elementary School
Principal Dr. Rita Mullins and The History Place representative Les Ewen also serve as club advisors. "It all started
when The History Place received this grant," Ms. Smith explained. The kids enjoy the club meetings, learning about
history and the special field trips.
Six Seniors Receive NC Teaching Fellows Scholarship
Six Carteret County Public School System seniors have been selected as 2008 recipients of North Carolina
Teaching Fellows scholarships, and one has been selected as an alternate. The Teaching Fellows Program provides
a $6,500-per-year scholarship for four years to 400 outstanding North Carolina high school seniors. Sponsored
by the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission, the program was created in the General Assembly in 1986. It
has become one of the top teacher recruiting programs in the country. The program identifies academically
talented students interested in teaching and provides loans for college. The students "repay" the loans by
teaching at least four years in a North Carolina public school. Each year thousands of North Carolina high
school seniors compete for the 400 scholarships. This years' recipients are:
David Brinn Roach - Croatan High School
Peter Thomas Carraway - East Carteret High School
Katlin Amanda Curtis - East Carteret High School
Nicki Danielle Daniels - East Carteret High School
James Matthew Joyner - East Carteret High School
Reba Anna Schmidt-West Carteret High School

Battle of the Books Winners
Battle of the Books provides a fun, challenging way to motivate middle school students to read
books from a wide variety of genres. Schools participate in a 'quiz bowl'-style tournament that
tests their knowledge of a list of books selected by the state organizations' committee for Battle
of the Books. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a
variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature.
The team from Hunters Creek Middle School placed 1st at the local Battle of the Books competition held
in March. As first place winners, Hunters Creek Middle School continued their quest to earn 1st place in
the Regional Battle of the Books competition. As the 1st place winner in the regional competition, Hunters
Creek Middle School team earned top honors at the state competition, which was held on the campus of
UNC-Greensboro.

The Morehead-Cain scholarship pays all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including the cost of a laptop computer and four summer enrichment
experiences throughout the country. The value of the scholarship is approximately $80,000 for each
